The Syrian army has been forced to give up some areas in order to retain others in the war against rebels, now in its fifth year, President Bashar al-Assad has acknowledged. The Syrian leader also said the army faced a shortage of soldiers.

Iraqi forces has reiterated its plans and hope to retake the city of Tikrit from Islamic State (IS) within a week, a commander disclosed to journalists. The head of a Shia militia brigade, fighting alongside government forces, said that IS militants still held about 70% of Tikrit’s town centre.
President Goodluck Jonathan has addressed Nigerians over the on-going war between the Nigerian army and Boko Haram forces in the Northern part of Nigeria. In a post on Facebook President Jonathan said the fight against Boko Haram was now at a critical stage.
