Femi Kuti and the Positive Force hit NYC

Who: Powerhouse afro-beat musician Femi Kuti, son of afro-beat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, subject of popular Broadway show Fela!

Where and When: New York City’s Highline Ballroom, April 26th

What: As part of his 2011 US tour which began on April 19th, Femi makes a stop in one of his favorite cities, NYC.  The crowd was a diverse one – the ballroom was chock-full of New Yorkers of all ages and races, with one thing in common: their love for afro-beat music, although, once the show began, you could definitely spot the Nigerians in the crowd! The afro-beat group was clad as usual in African ensemble – Femi in green matching shirt and pants, the band members similarly dressed in orange, and the dancers in considerably less clothing. The Positive Force was made up of 10 members including 3 barefoot, rump-shaking dancers, the crowd’s favorite.

Music: Often carrying a political message with socially-conscious lyrics, yet always moving the crowd, Femi and the band performed hits from his latest album Africa for Africa, which dropped early this year. [The album is available for purchase HERE.] They also played popular afro-beat classics like “Sorry, Sorry” and “Beng Beng Beng”, ensuring the crowd was alive with chants of “Arara Rarara!” to which the energetic crowd responded “Ororo Rororo!”

High Point: Have to say my fave was definitely the rendition of Beng Beng Beng, which was preceded by a funny anecdote on James & Janet. See video below.

As usual with Femi, his entertaining stage presence, charisma and always-powerful message made the show outstanding. He also gave a similar performance at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on April 27th.

His tour continues to hit most of the major US cities (Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, LA, San Fran) through the months of April/May and ends on May 15th in Seattle. To see when he’s in your city, check HERE.
